Last week I had the honour of attending the opening of the Hermitage Amsterdam – the only institution representing the magnificent State Hermitage in the West. The opening exhibition entitled ‘At The Russian Court’ wowed the crowds with a glimpse of Russian glamour; full of spectacular jewel-encrusted ball gowns, it made Dior’s latest collections look like something you’d pick up in H&M. It was all a very regal event - even the Dutch Queen and the Russian President Medvedev were in attendance. The Hermitage Amsterdam is just another great example of the strong bond between the Netherlands and Russia, dating back to the 17th Century when Peter the Great secretly visited Amsterdam to make plans for his own city on the water. Yes, I know we keep harking on about that guy, but in July he again plays a big role as Russia celebrates the birthday of the Russian fleet, which he (with the help of his Dutch friends) founded all those years ago...
